THE SOUTH AFRICAN CHOIR
Do you like to sing? Then come and
join us!
We are a few members of the SASS who would like to contribute to the
upcoming celebration of Ghana 50 years of independence. We will meet
twice and are planning
to sing Nkosi sikelel´ iAfrika and one or two more South African songs.
Hopefully we will be able to do the same performance on our own parties in
the near future.
The Ghanaian Independence Day is on the 6th of March but the celebration in
Stockholm will take place on the 15th and 17th of March.
The first rehearsal will be on March 4th (Sunday). We have not decided on time
yet but the venue is:
Afro Söder frisörsalong, Krukmakargatan 20 (in Stockholm). T-Mariatorget
(exit: Wollmar Yxkullsgatan) 08-668 70 90
We know that there are members who would like to learn to sing the national
Anthem and this is a great opportunity to learn the first part.
If you want to join us please send an e-mail or text message to Viveca (Vivi)

HISTORICAL BACKGROUND
Ghana Union has actively participated in our functions and we think that it
is about time to give something back to the Ghanaian people. The former South
African Ambassador to Sweden is married to a Ghanaian and during their stay
in Sweden ties were strengthened between our two associations. We should try
to maintain and even strengthen those ties and we believe that this is a great
opportunity to do so.
Ghana was the first African country to be liberated (1957) under the leadership
of Kwame Nkrumah who was a well known pan-Africanist. 2007 marks a very important
year in the history of Ghana not only due to the 50 years of independence.
It is also 200 years since the British abolished the slave trade (even though
the trans-Atlantic slave trade continued illegally from the Ghanaian slave
dungeons). Emancipation Day will be celebrated in Ghana on August 1st and Nkosi
sikelel´ is a song that is being sung during Revelation Night on July
31st at the main slave fort that was actually built by the Swedes in 1635.
